mg vs Micrograms: Understanding Peptide Label Units
A milligram (mg) and a microgram (µg, sometimes written mcg) both describe mass. A milliliter (mL) describes volume. Keeping those units separate is the first step in reading a research label or checking a concentration calculation.
Convert mg to micrograms by multiplying by 1,000. Convert micrograms to mg by dividing by 1,000.
Conversion examples
| Milligrams | Micrograms |
|---|---|
| 0.1 mg | 100 µg |
| 0.5 mg | 500 µg |
| 1 mg | 1,000 µg |
| 10 mg | 10,000 µg |
These are unit conversions, not suggested quantities for any product or application.
Why mg and mL are different
A label that says “10 mg per vial” gives a compound amount. It does not tell you a solution concentration. “5 mg/mL” describes mass per unit of solution volume. You need both an amount and a volume to calculate that relationship.
Check the unit before entering a value
In the calculator, select the same mass unit used on your source label. Enter the solution volume in mL. The tool then displays both mg/mL and micrograms/mL. Changing a unit without converting the number changes the meaning of your entry.
Write a leading zero for a value below one, such as 0.5 mg. Keep the number and unit together when copying a result into a laboratory record.
Are µg and mcg the same amount?
Both are used to mean micrograms. µg uses the SI symbol for micro; mcg is a plain-text spelling commonly encountered on labels. Confirm ambiguous abbreviations with the supplier.
Can I convert mg directly to mL?
You need a concentration or other relevant physical information. Mass and volume are different quantities, so there is no universal mg-to-mL conversion.
